It was an honor to talk with him and he was an exemplary gentlemen. So glad to to spend some time with both Sharon and Don over the years and a memorable time was at the Feb 2019 Concours In the Hills in Fountain Hills, Az with their fully restored Cobra CSX2173. With deepest sympathy..

Thank you to all for the wonderful comments about Don. I so appreciate them; Don would have been embarrassed.

He could drive and outdrive many in any car he slid into the driver's seat of. Can-Am, Trans-Am, Bugeye Sprite, Formula 5000 (he held the overall track record at PIR in the Lola T-190, broken a few years later by a go-kart), Ford Boss 302, Shelby GT-350, Datsun 510, Sports Renault, Ford GT-40, AMC Javelin, to name just a few. He and I even co-drove in an ASRA enduro at Firebird in my Spec RX7. He didn't like the RX7 and made the comment after the race, "when I push the throttle, I want to go NOW". With the Spec RX7, it needed to think a moment or two before actually accelerating. No sudden burst of speed out of that race car, like a Cobra.

Don was also the first road racer to be inducted into the Arizona Motorsports Hall of Fame, in 1999. The next road racer inductee was Tex Guthrie just a couple of years ago.

Don was "my racing hero" for a long time. I met Don and Sharon at Mini Sports back in 1985 when I needed a Weber carburetor part for my daily driver Triumph Spitfire.
We were talking about his beautiful black MGB "Migba" when he mentioned that he autocrossed it and I should come out to an event that they were having that weekend.
If it wasn't for Don, I never would have found out about autocrossing. After Don and Sharon sold Mini Sports, Don started working on race cars in his shop at home.
He built a DSP engine for my Spitfire.
I went to my first Pro Solo in 1989 when Don was the man to beat in DSP. I watched in "awe" as he would slide the Migba thru the finish an inch away from the cones.
Years later, he built the engine for my ASP Lotus Elan. The first event with the new engine was a practice day and he came out to help me. I would take a run
and he would tell me to take a tight line and the next runs he would tell me to take a wider line and focus on corner exit. We did that all day long.
I probably learned more in that one day than all the driving schools I ever went to. Don was a big part in all my National Championships.

Thank You Don, I'll miss you.

Don (and Sharon) was a regular fixture when I began my autocrossing career, and he and Sharon were always nice and helpful to anyone at any time. I am sorry to learn of his passing.

My condolences Sharon, and to the rest of the family. May he forever rest in peace on the perfect racetrack with his car of choice at his command.

I have been absent from the local autocross scene for several years.

But, Don's passing is something I must respond to and repeat what a great guy he was!

For those of us who knew him for decades, we were always inspired by his skills and personality. I really do not remember a time when Don was not there in our solo scene. And he was really casual and humble about what he could do; and willing to help/advise others. Just a really great person even outside of motorsports. He will be missed, and most likely I will not see another person like him in my lifetime.

I am truly saddened by this post.
I will always remember Don and Sharon in their Honda S2000 at local AutoX events. Don and Sharon were helpful to me and my son during these events. My now 19 year old son has been given numerous rides in their car since he was 12 years old both with Don and Sharon as drivers. I loved the competitiveness between husband and wife co driving the S2000. What an influence for local drivers.

Sharon I am sorry for your loss and this late post. I hope to still be blessed with your presence at local events.
