I have a bent go-kart axel and I want to salvage the bearings to re-use.
I can't get the darn things off; penetrating oil and a hammer netted me 40 minutes of sweat for 1/2" movement. Can I get these off with a shop press of suffecient height ? Anybody know who I can take it too ? (I think bearings/cassettes cost about $30-40 each so if its cheaper to use a press....) |

Bring it to the meeting tonight. There should be a somewhat local Kart expert there. I think.

Um, if you have been banging on them, I'd replace. Cut em off and get new ones. -------------------- |

The bearings are ok, I was driving the axle through a vice which the bearing center sat on, no chance of me beating on the casing directly.
Still though I understand it can't be the *best* thing for them. I should just cut the axle since its bent. Here's the kind I have These are the cassettes that are on them (second one down) So I *should* be able to re-use the cassettes. What is the best way to get a bearing onto a new axle then ? should they slide on a bit easier and then just pop in the set screw ? (and collars) Sorry, a bit new to karts ... |

I haven't done them myself yet. Is this the rear axle? I think you need to make sure all the set screws are loose, the axle and the chassis screws. Then make sure the cassette screws are loose and then try and bang the axle out.
If they are the fronts, they should be able to just press out with a bear puller or similar. I'll check mine and let you know what I find out. -------------------- |

After a year of work, its finally done (ish)
It still needs a proper throttle, but I couldn't wait to test it out. http://ev.gearboxmagazine.com/2010/07/13/s...all-the-e-kart/ It's not anywhere near race ready, I'm not sure it will be auto crossed, that'd be up to a tech inspection Any advice from the kart-folks ? I could bring it to a Marana event to get advice on making it race-worthy. ![]() ![]()
