(going off topic to get my topic across) the main difference between auto x and gymkhana is in gymkhana you do more "technical" things like e brake slides, and reversing thats all fine and dandy but how come in auto x (as far as i have ever seen) we dont do any "circles around a cone" if you look to the left side of the map. they just do 1 loop around a cone....is that not "autoX"??? just wondering....or is there any "weird" things that autoX does that is maybe not gymkhana? im just wondering...it just seems like it would be cool to do a slalom and then a whole 360

Well for one, the launch interval would be super slow on that course, you'd almost have to wait until 1 car finished before sending the next one. Now as far as not having any "360 spin cones" I'm not sure, but I'm sure the safety stewards and course designers will chime in there.

Gymkhana's are fun.. even when your visiting back east and in a rental car!

There was a pivot cone at one of the Tucson events a few months ago. I liked it a lot, but I don't think the others felt the same way. I would welcome more pivot cones and 360 cones.

E slides / turns and donuts are fairly hard on a car, not to mention tires. My car would especially need some work done to compete with the change.
I'd probably show up less to events if there was allways a tight pivot cone or 360. heavy FWD cars especially suck at pivot cones. probably not so bad in a sub 2400 Civic though. -------------------- Ryan Bernholtz - AKA Bernie - 2008 Civic Si - It's Galaxay Grey if you were wondering.

It is just plain painful. We had a course design called a Christmas elf. Part of the course had a pointy hat with pivot cone. I sure one or two people had fun, but it was pretty painful for everyone else. There always seem to be some tight stuff at BDI, cause you have to turn around on a taxi way that is only so wide. So there are places to experience this in Arizona. I bet they would not have them if they could avoid it though.

Agree with Dave, a local corvette event had a Valentine's day feature in the shape of a heart and the V was an exercise in lock to lock steering, no fun. At a Corvette Nationals event the course had a skidpad (360) feature, again not much fun or driving skill involved.

Yeah, I'll chime in against pivot cones as well, unless they are absolutely unavoidable. No fun, and okay, maybe there is some sort of "skill" involved, but it is not really precision driving, which is what our sport is about. There is no sense risking engine damage from lack of oiling for the sake of going around in a circle or a pivot. I know a 35 year veteran that will tell you "there should never be ANY corner more than 90 degrees on an autocross course."

E-braking to make a corner is something I did when I was a kid and I wasn't paying for the tires...OR if I happen to be in the need for an instant U-turn whilst driving a rental... -------------------- John Leonhardt

Many years ago there were a few courses with a "pivot cone" it really let the drive pick the line, break point etc as it was usually a 180* turn.
