well.....?
cwmizner
well what? =)

if you are referring to my current game with Mr. Shaw, 3 moves have been made, I'm sure it will take a bit to finish the game...
lav01
3 moves?

945ish to 545pm 8 hrs and 3 moves. i am remembering why i quit chess. where is the clock?
cwmizner
you can specify max time allowed per move, 2 days is the minimum I think, our game is at 3 days.

i'm online often as are a lot of the people on gameknot, i commonly finish a game in 2-4 days.

I can't stand slow paced chess games. Even a 5 minute time limit would try my patience. Guess I better stick to playing the computer where I can go as fast as I want to more or less.

yahoo has games you can play and set a timer, speed chess is fun too
fahrvergnugen
The problem with speed chess (5 minute) is that the strategy can shift from sound moves to those which baffle the heck out of the competitor and make them eventually run their clock out. Not to mention that it can be brutal on the clock itself. I prefer to let my competitor use his clock, so that it gets hammered and most likely fails (versus mine).

The best compromise is tournament play where the moves/hour is reasonable enough to allow thoughtful analysis versus being totally uncertain (or afraid) to move forward. The clock is still used, but is more of an issue for timid players who don't have a clue what they are doing..... rolleyes.gif

We do have a problem coming up here in that we are heading off to Glacier National Park this next week and there is no internet or cell phone access within 10 miles of the park entrance! So, we are heading into "dark country"...

Would sure hate to hand Chad a victory just due to lack of an electronic link... rolleyes.gif

I worked at Glacier for a couple of years back in 1999-2000, and there is cell phone service throughout almost the entire park as long as you are on paved roads (if you hike into the back country, then yea, you'll be SOL).

Internet access should be easily available on the west side of the park (Kalispel area), but the east side was spotty at best (dial-up only back in 00'). It's possible that there are some wireless options available if you are near Browning/East Glacier, but if so, it's been added in the last 10 years.

Thanks for the info, but Verizon claims that they have no service outside of Maple Grove...

Kinda exciting to end up in part of the world that isolated from all humanity.... laugh.gif

Uh, oh.... this is embarrassing.... the place we are going is Glacier, WA which is next to the Mt Baker Snoqualmie National Forest and North Cascades National Park. Still no broadband service, but not it is not in Montana.

That's the risk you take listening to an old fart.... rolleyes.gif

In any case... I will be heading into "Dark Country" next week.

Mark, there is a vacation setting at gameknot, haven't used it, but check it out, it will allow us to put our game on hold...

at the risk of speaking too soon...

That being said, all is not as it appears to be. ohmy.gif People..........reach for your calculators!!! beer.gif

Clearly this is "SCCA Chess", and Mr. Shaw has a "Pax Chess Factor" of .777, whereas the younger and more viral (or is that virale? ph34r.giflaugh.gif )
Mr. Mizner is .888. This is the equivalent to a "Get out of Jail" Monopoly card, only this one is "Get out of Checkmate". laugh.gif

I mean, c'mon, Mark is lucky enough to remember how the pieces move let alone place them competitively. biggrin.gif

Surely this is two out of three......... huh.gif
cwmizner
I'll play him until he's had enough... (again at the risk of being overconfident, he's not bad, so hard to tell after half a game, but I'd surmise he'd beat me, o, 30-35% of time???)
lav01
well scott, you forgot all the other matches that are being played on the website. what about every other game being played? maybe chad gets a checkmate, but what if mark still has too many pieces left? then on the curve (pax) the cutoff for a checkmate was 5 pieces and mark still had 6 so even though the game is over, mark wins.

sounds like pax in class may be the better option. not grading on a curve.
cwmizner
Mark folded like a cheap suit, hate to rub it in, but he did start it, if you can't beat a sorry a......, what does that make you? laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

"sorry a......" -- 1
Mr Shaw -- 0

next game in a week or so
